Crofton Design's BIM Showcase at MIPIM 2016

Wednesday, March 02, 2016

Leading SME building services consultancy Crofton Design is making a major investment at MIPIM this year to showcase its construction technology expertise to potential clients.

Steven Hale, director and founder of Crofton Design, says: “We are exhibiting at MIPIM to demonstrate to our clients and potential clients how our investment in technology can improve their project outcomes. All our projects are now designed using BIM and our staff our trained to incorporate it into their design modelling practices.”

This year, Crofton Design has taken one of the larger stands in the London Pavilion (C15) at MIPIM and
have designed it with the intention of engaging visitors via an interactive area to demonstrate the benefits of using BIM as a standard of excellence in building modelling. This will be done with the aid of a Virtual Reality Oculus Rift headset which will also go into a prize draw worth £450.

The stand will also include a video showing BIM technology at work with the creation of the steel sequencing for the construction of a school in Kent. This was especially helpful in this particular case because of site constraints and the difficulty of positioning a crane on the site.

Hale says: "Astute clients are already seeing the benefits of using a Virtual Reality Oculus Rift headset. It allows them to look at a building model our engineers produce from a “live experience” perspective. When one would usually look at plans in 2D or 3D on a screen, the headset creates a virtual reality that helps to identify faults or quality issues at the design stages. It saves cost and time for all stakeholders involved in the construction project; particularly for the builders who can prevent delays incurred to rectify design faults as those are usually revealed at building stage. This results in greater building efficiency."

Hale continues: “We are trying to show that, as an SME focused on delivering added value to clients, there are tangible benefits associated with leveraging technology in construction. Our presence at MIPIM is a strategic initiative to connect with like-minded organisations who also want to contribute to advancing the standards in the construction industry and align with Government recommendations to seek building efficiencies and strive for world-class standards."
