Excellence in Engineering

catch-up 2013 Edition 10

As the scorching summer makes way for the autumn, Crofton has been up to its award-winning tricks with a new piece of glassware for the trophy cabinet (we'll need an extension soon!) and another award nomination. Although, it was more ‘pot luck’ than ‘trick shot’ for our engineers during July’s American Pool event; but we’re still smiling as we undertake a number of new projects for existing clients; notably the literary Eastgate House in Rochester, famed for its appearance in Charles Dickens' Pickwick Papers

in the pipeline

what we've been up to...

Crofton hosts a range of events throughout the year to bring together colleagues from across the construction industry.

Golf Taster Day

Friday 25 October 2013

West Kent

While Crofton may be on for an Eagle as consulting engineers, it will be recognised by the team that their abilities on the green are not on Par - and we feel we may not be alone....

Which is why we are organising a golf taster day for budding amateurs such as ourselves to have a go in a relaxed environment without the fear or losing a deal (or a ball!) over a friendly game of golf.

To secure your place or for more information contact Katie Neal at marketing@crofton-design.com

Places are strictly limited and on a first come, first served basis. Once places are filled, names will be added to a waiting list and notified in case of any drop outs.

American Pool Evening

Tuesday 22 October 2013

Clerkenwell, London

It's our final London social evening of 2013, so do make sure you're available to join us at 1920 Bar.

Don't worry if you don't know one end of the cue from the other - join us for a drink and food. You can request an invitation by contacting Katie Neal marketing@crofton-design.com

Save the Date -

FORGE Turns Five!

Thursday 9 May 2014

The Willis Building, 51 Lime Street, London

Our popular collaborative networking event, FORGE - celebrates its 5th birthday next year, so make sure you save the date now to join us for the celebrations!

Programme details and further information will be released closer to the time. To ensure you're on the mailing list contact enquiries@forgelondon.org

You can find details of past events at the FORGE website

It’s another win for Crofton as we are named SME of the Year at the Constructing Excellence in the South East Awards 2013. The awards aim to recognise outstanding construction companies and projects that have delivered improvements in all-round performance through collaborative working and a strong desire to make a difference. Crofton will now go forward to the National finals, with winners announced in November 2013.

Our building services engineers are working on a number of projects for the Metropolitan Housing Trust, designing central plant replacements and reviewing existing heating distribution systems for residential tower blocks across Central London

Construction has started onsite for blocks C, D and E at Chelsea Creek, the prestigious development by long-standing client St George Central London. Crofton has also recently been commissioned for building services engineering design for additional blocks at luxury residential development Fulham Reach for the same developer.

Work has completed at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent for new Orthopaedics and Obstetrics theatres. To ensure the Orthopaedic theatre’s air was as sterile as possible, an up to date “laminar flow system” was installed that filters air entering the theatre to a very high level of cleanliness. A major challenge was the lack of space in the ceiling void where the services for the laminar flow system could be installed.

Crofton is delighted to be working again with Thomas Ford and Partners on another Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) project. Following our successful partnership at Great Dixter House, we are appointed to provide building engineering design services for the restoration of Eastgate House in Rochester, home of Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. The Grade I listed building is owned by Rochester City Council, and work is due to begin on site in January 2014.

Meanwhile, construction work has begun at the Battle of Britain Museum, situated at Capel-le-Ferne in Kent. Crofton is providing multidisciplinary engineering design services - including structural engineering - for this new visitor's centre. The unique building, designed by Godden Allen Lawn, will be shaped like a Spitfire Wing.

Events round-up

On Tuesday 9 July we were joined by clients, colleagues and friends at 1920 Bar in Clerkenwell for an evening of American pool. A special mention to Richard Claxton of Pellings, who was possibly the King of the tables and must have won almost every game…! Round 2 will be taking place on Wednesday 25 September, so if you fancy flexing your pool cue, contact Katie Neal to be added to the invitation list

Crofton is proud to work with the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) in supporting the next generation of engineers. For our third year as part of the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) we partnered with Darrick Wood Sixth Form in Kent to help Year 12 students design a zero-carbon home. Visit the Crofton website for more information on the project.

It was ‘All Aboard!’ with Cap’n Shaun Barkshire and First Mate Nathan Williams as they took guests out on the AnnabelOlivia for a sunset cruise in August and September. More pictures can be found on our Facebook page. Feel free to tag yourself if you were there!

After cycling 440km from London to Paris, Barry Henson, Steven Hale, Ashley Rudd, Jing Yang and Margaret Cwikla were delighted to raise £2,765 for the Royal British Legion. You can still sponsor them - visit www.justgiving.com/team-crofton

Lancing Beach, East Sussex

Crofton has been appointed as M&E engineer for the  redevelopment of the site of a disused cafe on Lancing Beach. Working with Zed Factory Architects on the proposed 2-storey, steel frame building, a new cafe and water sports centre will be located on the ground floor, with hostel-style accommodation and three separate apartments on the first floor.

The building is designed to be a sustainable hub for the seaside town, with the apartments exceeding the Zero Carbon Homes standard. Other key features of the development include mechanical ventilation with heat recovery; photovoltaic panels; an air source heat pump and high levels of insulation.

With Lancing's growing reputation for Kite Surfing, the building is ideally placed to cater for visitors all year round and increase general tourism in the area.

For more details about this project, contact Nathan Williams in the East Sussex office.

Four apprentice Building Services technicians joined Crofton in September as part of an innovative 3-year apprenticeship in conjunction with the Apprenticeship Technician Consortium and South Thames College. On completion of the programme, they will receive Technician membership with the Chartered Institute of Chartered Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the professional qualification EngTech and a pathway to further their professional development at university to Chartered Engineer should they choose.
We wish Marcus Palmer, Kibreya Hossain, Juran Ukereghe and Conor Callcutt all the best as they embark on their careers with us.

Meanwhile, we also welcome Lewis Courtnell from Brighton University as he joins the Newhaven office for a 12 month undergraduate placement in Building Services Engineering.

Marketing Manager Katie Neal has been shortlisted for B2B Marketing Awards ‘Marketer of the Year 2013’. As the only entrant representing an SME – and the construction industry - in the category, she is up against fierce competition, but we have our fingers crossed for a good result!
