Excellence in Engineering

catch-up 2013 Edition 8

A Happy New Year to all our clients and friends! We left the old year with a bang, as Crofton made the Top 10 of Building magazine’s ‘Fastest Growing Construction Consultants’, and we're looking forward to an exciting 2013, with the progression of exciting projects, such as the Big Park at Newhaven. Our team is expanding, with new additions to the London and Kent offices; and we're also continuing our popular events schedule. If you're attending MIPIM this year do let us know so we can arrange a catch-up coffee along La Croisette.

Crofton has picked up a number of new clients; we've been appointed as M&E engineers for the construction of a new public park in Newhaven. Incorporating a community centre, playground and MUGA, the scheme will become a focal point for the local community.

There's a number of projects underway with new client SecretCape; providing building services design for a number of luxury residential refurbishments in Central London.

We are excited to be working with Copper Brown on the building services design for a brand new music studio in North Finchley.

We're delighted to have been recognised as 7th Fastest Growing Company of 2012 in Building’s Top Construction consultants (28/09/12 edition). Also in the news, Crofton's joint venture as part of SME consortium Assured Partnerships also hit the headlines in October.

As part of the Diamond Light Source framework, we have been appointed for a number of projects at the UK's national synchrotron facility, based in Oxford. Amongst these, we have been commissioned for building services and structural engineering design as part of the creation of a new laser beam line. Once complete, the beam line will be used for scientific research.

Work has begun onsite at Goat Lees Primary School in Kennington, near Ashford. Crofton was appointed as M&E consultant as part of this new-build one-form entry school for Kent County Council (image at top).

In conjunction with the Institute of Health Estates Managers (IHEEM), Crofton hosted a round-table lunch to debate the gap in procurement skills in the NHS. The first part of the debate was featured in January 2013's edition of the Health Estate Journal, while Part 2 is coming up in February's edition

Events round-up

Over 70 guests joined us at 38 Southwark Street on 26 September as we celebrated our move to a new office. Have a look at the stunning views on our website

Steven Hale was among the judges of the International Building Press (IBP) Awards. Winners included Rhiannon Bury, who won the coveted Journalist of the Year Award, while Jess McCabe scooped Sustainable Writer of the Year. Meanwhile, Marcos DeCastro has been appointed as a judge for the H&V News Awards 2013.

Everything was ‘Under Control’ at the latest technical seminar. Taking place over a bacon roll at Howfield Manor, near Canterbury on Wednesday 28 November, Barry Henson discussed the importance of building controls for operational efficiency and basic principles of HVAC controls. The Crofton team celebrated Christmas this year with a sight-seeing tour of London on the famous 'Duck Tours' - unfortunately the weather was not kind and everyone was soaked! However, we soon dried off during Christmas lunch in Covent Garden.

The Kent-based structures team continues to expand as we welcome James Palmer as a graduate Structural Engineer. James graduated from the University of Bath in July 2011. Joining the London office is Jing Yang, a Mechanical Engineer with over 6 years' experience.

The London office also welcomes Alison Fulford as an Engineering Intern. Alison joins us for 6 months from the University of Edinburgh, where she is studying for a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.

The Kent office took on the charity fundraising challenge to ‘grow their mo’s’ for Movember. Instigated by electrical engineer Mark Harris, the team raised over £200 for raising awareness of men’s health issues by growing their facial hair for the month of November.

Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, London

Founded in 1854, The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability is located in Putney, and is the oldest independent hospital and medical charity in the UK.

Crofton was commissioned to provide M&E engineering services design for the refurbishment of an existing ground floor day ward. The proposed scheme will include a new specialist ward for people with severe spinal and head injuries.

Due to the varying nature of the patients’ disabilities, the inclusion of two suites was incorporated into the design. These consist of a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, and are used to help rehabilitate patients, such as soldiers who suffered brain injuries through their service, back into everyday life.

Additionally, the general layout includes four individual rooms, along with a common room and 9 offices for general administration.
