Excellence in Engineering

Ecclesbourne Primary School, Croydon

Situated in Thornton Heath, on the outskirts of Croydon, Ecclesbourne Primary school educates children from 4-11 years old.

Crofton was appointed to provide M&E engineering design services as part of a total refurbishment of the school. As the school needed to remain operational throughout, the works were staged in 9 phases over the course of 12 months.

The whole school, excluding the link building between the two educational blocks, was subject to refurbishment works.

The first task was to upgrade the electricity supply, as it was at capacity and needed to be able to support the programme of phased works. Undertaken two classrooms at a time, a systematic replacement of all original electrical distributors happened.

New ‘smart’ lighting controls were installed; designed to be highly energy efficient, they have the added benefit of sensing the levels of occupancy and amount of daylight, to self-regulate the levels of lighting they produce.

Mechanically, two new plant rooms were created; one for each side of the school. One existing boiler was refurbished, while the other was stripped out and replaced with a new high efficiency boiler to drastically cut energy consumption.

Crofton also provided thermal modelling services and advice on U-Values for the roof and facade to the architect during the initial design stages.
