The Barbican Cinema

The Barbican Estate took the decision in 2009 to relocate the existing Cinemas 2 & 3 to Exhibition Hall One; the original hall. This decision arose from the need to eliminate significant structure-borne noise which was causing a significant issue with newly-created flats on the upper levels of Frobisher Crescent.

The new contemporary building fabric was designed to complement the existing listed building fabric and to ensure that the new cinemas become a satellite film venue and focal point for the Barbican Centre, Estate & Community.

Crofton was selected to undertake full mechanical, electrical and public health design duties, forming an integral part of the design team from the outset. Our appointment prior to planning submission ensured that the scheme requirements met the satisfaction of the Planners, Client and local residents.

Noise reduction along with building fabric improvements was a key issue for the client. In addition the estate and the exhibition hall was served from an existing district heating, cooling & electrical system and retaining this historic link was considered an important factor in the project.

Our services design was undertaken to ensure that met the stringent noise and energy improvement criteria specified whilst maintaining the building historic links to the existing estate district energy infrastructure.

Additional work scheduled includes voltage harmonization as part of a reduction in the Energy and Carbon strategy to meet the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC).

These changes will ensure the Barbican Centre remains one of the predominant
centres for arts in the United Kingdom.
